All About Root of the Tree
What is Root of the Tree all about and who created it?
I thought some of you may be interested in why I created this toolbar and how the idea came about, so here's my story...
The endless search
My name is Amber, I am a full-time working mom to two wonderful boys and I have an amazing, supportive husband who stays home and takes care of all of us. I love to create and build and learn and I have always had a passion for computers.
My boys have also acquired an interest in computers, as I think many kids do. They would often ask to play a game when they saw me working, so I would take a break to do just that, but here's the thing, it drove me nuts to try to find something for them while they were sitting on my lap. I would, of course, start with a search and end up at some bogus site that was full of ads and my son would see a flashy advertisement and say, "Oh, I want to play that one!" and after explaining to him that it was not a game over and over, I would have to take a deep breath and start my quest again. It became so frustrating that I began to say no too often.
Building the toolbar
One night I decided I would spend time searching for games that I felt were appropriate for each of my two children who are currently 2 and 5. I began organizing the links in bookmarks and then decided to build a toolbar for each of them, so they could easily access the sites. I soon realized that other parents and childcare providers could really benefit from this useful and time-saving tool.
I decided to build a main toolbar for parents and sub toolbars for kids in three different age groups.
It's not all about the games
My husband and I are both very family oriented people and enjoy spending time together doing activities we can all enjoy. So, I got the idea to also add offline activities, including crafts, cooking and family games.
Kids and Computers
Some people may think that young kids should not be using the computer, so I wanted to share my thoughts on this as well...
Today, computers are a part of our culture. They are everywhere and learning to use them is really important. I also believe moderation is key. The time spent on computers should be limited, but not avoided. There are such amazing things in our world to discover and although many of these things can be explored through travel and books and play, computers and the internet are an incredible, additional resource that should be used to enhance our childrens' educational development.
