How do you shop for skincare products?

What is your method for finding the right skincare products for you? Where do you get the most information about the products you try?

step 1 Consult a dermatologist, aesthetician or other skin care professional. Ask for a consultation appointment so you have a professional’s opinion of what products your skin needs.

Step 2 Decide what skin problems you want to focus on. Acne needs a different skin care system than age spots or rosacea, for instance. Make sure the products you address all of your issues, even if you have to mix and match among treatments.

Step 3 Know your ingredients. It seems there’s a new star ingredient among skin care products every day-AHAs, copper peptides and antioxidants, just to name a few. Familiarize yourself with these ingredients and their applications so you can make the right choices for your skin.

Step 4 Shop around. Skin care products with similar ingredients and formulations vary widely in price. Expensive products are not necessarily more effective than cheaper ones.

Step 5 Economize where you can. Sometimes cosmetics companies, like La Mer and Chantecaille, have more affordable products that feature their super-expensive, world-famous skincare ingredients. Chantecaille, for example, features their much-touted Stress Repair Eye Cream in their Bio Lift Concealer.

Step 6 Ignore cutesy names and precious packaging. When you buy skincare products, what’s on the inside counts.

Step 7 Ask for samples. Most skin care companies are happy to give potential customers a few days’ or a week’s worth of samples. Try before you buy and avoid a high-priced mistake.
